Three out of four Americans struggle with weight. The largest contributing factor to good health is maintaining a steady weight and following a good diet. Obesity is a serious health issue, but Magdalena Kerschner, MD, at Victory Weight Loss & Wellness believes weight loss is possible with the proper medical attention and support.  Her goal is to provide a safe, medically approved program customized to meet each client’s specific needs and expectations. 

Dr. Kerschner’s programs differ from other diets in that it is a medically supervised program.  Her team employs a variety of tests and assessments to ensure they have developed a thorough understanding of the unique needs of each client.  All patients initially undergo lab testing to screen for hormone abnormalities, thyroid issues, evidence of metabolic syndrome, high cholesterol, lipid disease and any other conditions that could hinder them from achieving their goals.  Obese individuals often have an endocrine imbalance, insulin resistance or thyroid issues that can be overcome with medical attention. Dr. Kerschner believes in creating a customized plan for each client, taking into consideration the patient’s specific medical issues.  

“Based on the client’s lab results and individual goals established during the initial free consultation, I create a custom-tailored weight-loss program,” she says. “We try to look at the diet holistically and all the compounding factors, recognizing that each patient is unique. Someone with metabolic issues needs to be treated differently than someone who doesn’t have medical conditions. 

“We also offer body composition testing, which includes not just weight checks but BMI (body mass index) measurement, fat content percentage measurement, water content measurement and visceral fat measurement to enable us to better monitor the weight-loss process.” 

After analyzing the  lab results, Dr. Kerschner develops a customized plan that might  incorporate medication to treat underlying health problems that prevent weight loss.  Although the process might require a change in behavioral habits, Dr. Kerschner’s team educates each client regarding the nutritional benefits and medical reasoning for any suggested lifestyle changes. 

The program includes weekly follow-up appointments where Dr. Kerschner addresses any concerns. During the check-in, the client completes a weigh-in, assessment of metabolic weight, visceral fat levels, fat percentage, water percentage and vitals. The data serves as an indicator of the effectiveness of the client’s individualized program and provides feedback to Dr. Kerschner, enabling her to tweak the plan and address any issues that might have arisen. 

Dr. Kerschner’s ultimate goal is to empower clients to make healthy choices that result in lasting change.  One of her primary strategies is to coach clients, equipping them with tools to make healthy choices. 

“We teach patients portion control as well as ways to make healthy choices when they face temptation,” she says. “Some people give into temptation when traveling for work or binge eating when they are stressed. Each person’s unique issues must be taken into consideration and we adjust the diet based on their lifestyle. We also teach relapse management so that patients don’t spiral downward and continue overeating after messing up.” 

After years of yo-yo dieting, Dr. Kerschner’s holistic approach to weight loss was a lifeline for Tracey Santana. During her treatment, Dr. Kerschner discovered Santana had an untreated thyroid issue. Once that was resolved, the weight began to fall off.  In five months, Santana lost 75 pounds, dropping from size 18 to size 6 with basic diet modifications and medication. Her cholesterol, which had been dangerously high at 400, quickly stabilized at a healthy 180. A year later, Santana has managed to keep off the weight. She credits Dr. Kerschner’s holistic approach and her commitment to coaching her clients to make more educated diet choices.
