Slowing the Aging Process in Men

Men like to joke about it, but it is no laughing matter. Low testosterone can cause many symptoms and potentially contribute to developing serious chronic diseases. However, hormone changes in men occur very gradually: testosterone decreases one to two percent every year after age 30. This so-called male menopause or Low-T is misunderstood by many men, so when they start experiencing symptoms they are often left wondering what is wrong.

“It is very normal for testosterone levels to decrease as men age,” explains Magdelena Kerschner, MD, board-certified anesthesiologist and board-certified interventional pain specialist. Trained in  bioidentical hormone replacement therapy and preventive medicine, she specializes in wellness and anti-aging medicine, as well as interventional pain management.

The decreasing levels of testosterone begin to cause symptoms in most men after the age of 40, and can include:

•    Decreased exercise strength

•    Decreased muscle mass

•    Weight gain, especially belly fat

•    Depression, loss of well-being

•    Fatigue

•    Decreased energy

•    Increased irritability

•    Loss of sex-drive

•    Sexual function impairment

“Many men explain it as having lost their mojo,” Dr. Kerschner explains. Using a holistic approach to treatment, Dr. Kerschner uses natural, bioidentical hormones in a variety of delivery methods to increase testosterone levels in her patients.

Bioidentical hormones are structurally identical to the hormones your body produces. Bioidentical hormones are not drugs and fit like a lock and key on to the receptor sites and utilize identical metabolic pathways like our own pathways.

New patients undergo a history and physical  complete with a laboratory workup. Using these results and the patient’s symptoms, Dr. Kerschner develops a personalized hormone supplementation program that is carefully monitored and adjusted until the optimal hormone levels have been achieved.

Not only will patients find their symptoms subsiding, Dr. Kerschner says they will feel revitalized. “When the levels of hormones are replaced, men will find themselves feeling much healthier and more vigorous.” The risk of side effects are minimal when hormones are prescribed by a well-trained physician like Dr. Kerschner, who closely monitors her patients.

Paul--a patient at Victory Weight Loss and Wellness – explains that the symptoms gradually creep up on you. “It isn’t like someone turned a switch,” he says. “It is more like a clock slowly winding down. You eventually notice that you aren’t like you used to be: I was tired, I had less energy, and it was hard to keep weight off.”  Paul emphasizes that there were not any significant physical changes. “It was all in the way I felt.”

Dr. Kerschner tested his testosterone levels to evaluate where they were, then started with the cream therapy until they found the right dosage. “It was really pretty dramatic once I started the treatment,” Paul says. “Not that this is the Fountain of Youth, but I certainly have more energy and I’ve been able to take up weight lifting.” Dr. Kerschner eventually changed his testosterone therapy to the pellets, which are inserted under the skin. “They last about six months and give a steady level,” Paul explains. “This really feels like having my batteries recharged!”

In addition to total hormone replacement regimes, Dr. Kerschner specializes in accompanying exercise, diet and nutritional supplements so patients can achieve the maximum benefit of slowing the aging process.
