The Ohio Polar Bear Plunge season opened on January 23, 2016 in Trumbull County at Mosquito Lake, one of the largest lakes in Ohio. The season continues through March 19th. Last year these signature fundraising events raised nearly $500,000 for Special Olympics in Ohio. This year promises to raise even more funds for this important association.

On February 6, the Ohio-Kentucky Polar Bear Plunge took place at Joe’s Crab Shack in Bellevue, Kentucky. This beautiful, but chilly, Saturday morning brought out a huge crowd of family members, friends, and loyal supporters. These enthusiastic spectators were eager to watch more than 800 brave souls of all ages take a leap into a huge pool of cold water set up in the parking lot. Cheers, screams, laughter and shivers were in abundance as plungers as well as supporters enjoyed this important fundraiser.

The Plunge works just like a walk-a-thon with Polar Bears raising a “bear” minimum of $75 ($50 for Junior Polar Bears) to earn the right to plunge. There was also a costume contest, which is always one of the highlights of this crazy, fun event of winter. The festive atmosphere was made even more special by the backdrop of the sparkling Ohio River and the banks of Cincinnati in plain view.

The Ohio-Kentucky Polar Bear Plunge was sponsored by Joe’s Crab Shack, media partners Fox and Q102.
