Following A Passion

For Surmeet Bedi, MD, her work truly is her passion.
“I’ve been working as an independent nephrologist for six years,” says Bedi. “I have independence and I take care of my patients how I want to. If given a chance I would do it all over again, I love it. I love what I do.”
Born and raised in India, Bedi came to the United States after completing medical school. After finishing her residency in Chicago and fellowship at University of Wisconsin Madison, Bedi moved to Cincinnati with her husband, Jay.
As a board certified nephrologist, Bedi specializes in kidney care and treating diseases of the kidneys.
“I decided to go into nephrology during my residency,” she says. “I was fascinated by the field because nephrology is like an art. Every nephrologist practices differently because there aren’t set procedures and protocols. I’m able to develop the best treatment plan based on a individuals needs.”
Three years ago, Bedi opened a home dialysis company to give her patients the opportunity to do dialysis, a life-saving procedure, in the comfort of their home. Bedi’s clinic is the only one of its kind to carry Amia PD Cycler. This new technology gives her the ability to offer home dialysis treatment to patients who may not have been candidates otherwise. “I love giving people the opportunity to do their dialysis at home and letting them feel like they have a life beyond dialysis,” she says.
When Bedi isn’t seeing patients she is actively involved in the community. She is the president-elect of Association of Indian Physicians of Cincinnati and a board member at the Indian American Chamber of Commerce – Greater Cincinnati & Northern Kentucky. In addition, she is the director of medicine at Clinton Memorial Hospital.
