Cincinnati Commercial Contracting Partners with Highway Contractors to Help Avondale Food Pantry
As part of its annual public service project, the Southwest Ohio chapter of the Ohio Contactors Association (OCA) has laid a new parking lot and driveway at the South Avondale site of the new location for the Adventist Outreach Ministry Food Pantry.
The parking lot is critical to make the building functional to carry on the food bank’s mission of helping those in need in the Avondale area, according to Barb Lungelow, the food pantry’s director.
“The parking area was just dirt and overgrown. We built a retaining wall and paved the parking lot. We will also be installing a security fence,” said Dennis Brunton, chief engineer with Barrett Paving Materials, Inc.
Brunton valued the work at $40,000. Several OCA members in Greater Cincinnati donated supplies and labor for the project. The effort was arranged and facilitated by John Westheimer, president of Cincinnati Commercial Contracting (CCC), whose company has donated labor and materials to multiple public service projects over the years.
The food bank has been servicing the area since 1952, currently operating out of the Shiloh Seventh Day Adventist Church, 3660 Washington Ave, Avondale. Recently it acquired a new 3,000 sq. ft. building at 725 Whittier that can better serve clients. Besides providing a food bank for needy families, other outreach services include nursing care, cell phones and consultation on obtaining health insurance.
“The parking lot is a godsend,” said Lungelow. “It makes the new building serviceable and provides secure parking for our volunteers.”
Local firms who contributed to the project include Cincinnati Commercial Contracting, Barrett Paving, A&A Safety, JR Jurgenson, Kokosing, Great Lakes Construction, Richie Bros., Redi Rock, Prus, Spurlino, Martin Marietta, Watson Gravel and Security Fence Group.
