“We’re in our eighth year now, so we are moving from startup donations and support to working toward sustaining support,” adds Creed. “Whether it’s corporations, businesses, foundations – having a consistent level of giving so we can get to the point where we don’t need to raise a full year of support one year at a time.”

“At the end of the day,” says Jemison, “if we make a change in the trajectory for a student it’s worth it. We’ll have students who write us back from college, or get accepted to college, or get a scholarship, and they’ll want to tell us about it. Those individual situations make it clear to us that it’s worthwhile. There are going to be some significant trajectories that are going to change for a lot of these kids. None of us can go and change the whole world, but we can change the world one student at a time.”
